If you don’t buy bedding frequently, then choosing a mattress brand can be one hell of a job!

We were on a mission to pick some of the popular names that manufacture and sell mattresses in the country. And that’s when we came across Clark Rubber.

But are its mattresses worth investing in? Read on to find out.

Clark Rubber - a brief brand history

For the unversed, Clark Rubber is one of the earliest and most popular chains of retail stores, originating in the mid-1940s. The brand is termed a specialist in selling pools, foam and rubber, making it pretty unique on the Australian retail market.

Talking about the inception story, Clark Rubber was formed by a partnership between Charlesworth and Clarke in 1946. It grew rapidly over the next few years, making it to the Australian Stock Exchange in 1951.

Around the 1980s, the brand was sold to the Adsteam Group, which adopted a franchise-based business model and continued with it till 1994. Clark Rubber was then sold to Vita Pacific (a subsidiary of Pacific Dunlop), but the stores were closed down soon after.

However, it was the efforts of an Australian retailer veteran Chris Malcolm, who purchased the brand from Pacific Dunlop in 2000 and steered it to new heights of success.

Only 3 years later, Clark Rubber went on to become the Franchise Council in the country’s Franchise of the Year “Entry Capital Over $200,000” category. It also found a place in the organisation’s Hall of Fame the same year. Later, it won the prestigious Franchise of the Year award.

Today, Clark Rubber is owned by CRG Operations, with an ever-expanding network of stores and improved product offerings.

Clark Rubber mattress review - are they any good?

You don’t come across a lot of stores that specialise in both pools and mattresses (among other things). And this may make potential buyers apprehensive about the quality and cost-effectiveness of the latter.

However, Clark Rubber is known for its decent mattress offerings, which come in different sizes and prices. Not only that, but you will also find special mattresses for camping, caravanning and hospital beds.

To give you a better idea, here is a quick overview of some of the products that grabbed our attention.

1. Comfort standard single mattress

One of the cheapest mattresses in the category, the comfort standard mattress is ideal for occasional use during sleepovers or get-togethers. It’s made from medium-density foam infused with Ultra-Fresh compound for antibacterial protection.

Topped off with a lightweight and breathable microfiber cover for maximum comfort, this unit comes in 3 depth variations.

2. Comfort standard double mattress

If you’re looking for a couple mattress without having to break the bank, then the standard double mattress may fit the bill. With 3 depth variations and a standard medium foam construction, it aims to provide the right balance between comfort and support. Plus, the Ultra-Fresh compound keeps mould, mildew, dust mites and fungi at bay.

The removable cover is machine-washable, and the brand offers a 1-year warranty on this unit.

3. Comfort Premium latex king mattress

The Latex King mattress is for people who don’t mind extending their budget for premium purchases. It’s made from a combination of high-end density foam and natural latex layer to provide optimum support to your body posture.

As for the eco-friendly Tencel cover, it helps draw away excess moisture to keep you cool and comfortable. Simply take it off and drop it in the machine once in a while. And did we mention it’s backed by a 5-year warranty?

4. Comfort Deluxe full size 3-fold mattress

The single 3-fold mattress from the brand is designed for convenience and comfort in camps, caravans, trailers or your guest bedroom. Featuring a high-density firm foam construction, it promotes a hygienic and comfortable sleeping experience.

Additionally, the package includes a bag for easy transportability of the mattress.

Things to keep in mind

Some of the important aspects that you should keep in mind while buying from Clark Rubber are:

1. Click and collect service

The brand facilitates in-store pickup of mattress orders placed online, but you can also choose to get them delivered. However, there may be an additional delivery fee if the mattress is too heavy, bypassing the brand’s free delivery policy for orders amounting to $89 or more within 25 km of the servicing store.

You can check if your preferred mattress is excluded from the free delivery policy on the product page itself.

2. Custom-made mattresses

Some mattresses are categorised as “special order products,” which means they are custom-made, and the waiting time for delivery (or pickup) can extend up to 3 weeks.

3. Return and refunds

The brand accepts returns for a period of 30 days from the date of purchase, provided they are completely unused with original packaging and price tags. You can return the products via mail or drop them at your nearest Clark Rubber store with the original receipt of purchase.

Refunded amounts are credited to your account as per the mode of payment, but the return policy isn’t applicable to specially-made products.

4.  Interest-free financing

Orders over $499 qualify for interest-free payment plans for fixed periods. Any remaining balance after the 0% interest payment plan expires will be subject to interest.

What are some other products sold by Clark Rubber?

Aside from mattresses, you will find:

  • Spas and spa accessories
  • Water toys
  • Lounges and coolers
  • Swimming accessories
  • Boats and kayaks
  • Air pumps and pool filters
  • Bedding like pillows, mattress toppers, etc.
  • Carpets and artificial grass coverings

Not only that, but you can also contact the brand for pool water testing, servicing, pool repairs, etc.

Final words

That brings us to the end of today’s guide. But before wrapping up, here are our two cents: although Clark Rubber is reliable when it comes to mattresses, it doesn’t have a lot to offer in terms of design.

It may be better to go direct with the brand for the mattress-in-a-box concept, which has taken the bedding market by storm due to its ease of use and cost-efficiency.

You can go for something like the Emma Comfort Mattress, which is suitable for all types of sleepers. It also offers a superior buying experience with trial periods and a decade-long guarantee.
